The damage to your eyes starts when high levels of sugar in the bloodstream blocks the tiny blood vessels that go to your retina, causing them to leak fluid or bleed. In healthy eyes, there is a balance between the fluid that is made and the fluid that leaves the eye. Therefore, this fluid creates constant pressure within the eye and is needed to keep the eye swelled, supported, and working appropriately. Blurry vision may be caused due to the extra fluid leaking into the lens of the eyes. This can lead to the change in the shape of the lens and make it hard for your eyes to focus.
Short-term elevations in blood sugar levels can also affect the lens of the eye, causing blurred vision. Only after controlling diabetes, your blurry vision may get better. Sometimes the blurred vision causes a person to see an ophthalmologist, who then makes the diagnosis of diabetes.

Glaucoma
In this condition, new fluid is constantly being made within the eye, and the fluid that is being replaced leaves the eye by entering a drainage meshwork towards the front of the eye. The blockage of the drainage system can lead to increased fluid pressure within the eye. This condition is called glaucoma. It may happen due to the eye pressure that is caused by high blood sugar levels in diabetes.
Cataracts
High glucose level causes changes in the proteins inside the cells of the lens and alters the optical properties of the lens. A cataract is caused by clouding of the lens in the eye in a way that the person can’t see clearly. The symptoms of cataracts are gradual blurring of the vision, glare in bright light or sunlight, and poor colour vision, etc. Many people may have cataracts after ageing, but it is seen more often in people who are suffering from diabetes.

What is the NTproBNP test?
N-terminal pro b-type natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP) is a hormone that is made by the heart. An NTproBNP test basically aims at evaluating the level of this hormone in the blood.
Normally, this hormone is continuously produced in small amounts. But, when the heart is working extra hard or is not able to pump enough blood as per the requirement of the body, the production of NTproBNP increases. This condition is known as heart failure or congestive heart failure.
Remember when the term heart failure is used, it is meant that though the heart is still pumping blood, it is having difficulty doing so.
Who should get an NTproBNP Test?
Your doctor will ask for an NTproBNP test in case you exhibit the symptoms of heart failure. They may include –
- Difficulty breathing
- Coughing
- Fatigue
- Swelling in abdomen, legs, and feet
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
Why is the NTproBNP test needed?

Besides, those who have already had a heart attack in the past may have higher levels of NTproBNP in their blood. This indicates that these people are at a greater risk of developing further heart diseases. An NTproBNP test serves as an indicator of heart risk for these people.
What does NTproBNP test results mean?
A higher than normal NTproBNP value in the blood means heart failure. The severity of the condition will depend on how high your values are. Those who have kidney disease may also have high NTproBNP in their blood due to reduced clearance.
If the test results turn out to be normal, then this would mean your symptoms are due to some other issues.
Some people may have low NTproBNP levels. This happens when they are taking drug therapies for heart failure. Obese people also have lower concentrations of NTproBNP.

How is the NTproBNP test done?
For an NTproBNP test, a small sample of blood is needed. It is typically drawn from a vein in the arm. The process is simple, quick, and pain-free. You should not feel anything more than a small prick at the site where the needle is inserted.
There is usually no kind of preparation required for this test. Even fasting is not needed. But, be sure to inform your doctor of any medications you are taking or of any existing medical condition.
