“The littlest feet make the biggest footprints in our hearts”
As parents, you never stop worrying for your kids. They become the sole center of your world and your entire existence; all your decisions, choices, plans revolve around them. Nothing about your little ones is little, from their first cry they engrave a permanent place in your heart. Your love for your kids takes up a huge room in your heart hardly leaving space for anything else.
Every parent aspires and tries his best to offer the best opportunities for their kids and protect them forever from all the harms, sorrows and discomforts of life. The essentials of a healthy life has to be taught and taken care of from the very start. As they say with great joy comes great responsibilities, kids bring with them a constant burden of responsibilities.
You do not get a guidebook or handbook on how to raise kids correctly, as each child is different. Every child needs care and love. Growing years is the time when the kids are most susceptible to all kinds of infections and health problems. A lot precaution and care is needed to protect them from illnesses and ensure that they are physically and mentally healthy. A regular health checkup assists in the mammoth task of ensuring the good health of kids, it helps detect health problems and gives an overall health status.
What Is A Regular Health Checkup?
A regular health check is an essential part of staying healthy, as it helps in understanding the health status and diagnosing any health issue at an early stage. The basic health screening package is for the kids below the age of 13 as the early years are the most sensitive ones, the checkup mostly includes:
- Complete hemogram
- Thyroid profile
- Iron studies
- Urine routine and microscopy
- Blood group ABO and Rh typing
- Calcium total serum
- Blood glucose fasting
Let us go through the entire list of tests separately and understand how’s and why’s about them.
Complete Hemogram
Complete hemogram is combination of tests to determine the overall health and also detects health disorders like infections, allergic reactions, leukemia, anaemia etc. The Hemogram test includes parameters to assess:
- Red blood cells: They deliver oxygen to the different parts of the body
- White blood cells: These helps fight infections in the body
- Platelets
Thyroid Profile
Thyroid profile test or a thyroid stimulating hormone test is performed to evaluate the functioning of thyroid gland and to diagnose ant thyroid disorders. It helps:
- Diagnose and monitor the treatment of thyroid disorder
- Help in the evaluation of pituitary gland functioning
Iron Studies
Iron an important nutrient is required for the growth and development of children. Iron also helps in moving oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and aids the muscles in storing and using oxygen. Iron requirements for the kids are:
- 7-12 months: 11mg
- 1-3 years: 7 mg
- 4-8 years: 10 mg
- 9-13 years: 8 mg
If a child lacks the required amount of iron in their diet, then they suffer from iron deficiency, which can affect their growth and development. The iron studies test enables to detect the level of iron in the body and enables the correct and timely treatment incase of any health problem.
Urine Routine And Microscopy
Urinalysis is the most commonly performed biochemical test in infants and early childhood. A urine routine and microscopy test can help in detection of problems like urinary tract infection (UTI), kidney problems and any other metabolic disorder.
Urinary tract infection is a prevalent problem in children, and it is challenging to diagnose. A regular screening test can help the child with early diagnosis and treatment.
Blood Group ABO And Rh Typing
Blood types are classified in several ways and out of this ABO system is the most basic one. The system divides the blood group into A, B, AB and O. The blood groups can be detected by the presence or absence of antigens present on the surface. The second dominant grouping type is the Rhesus system (Rh). The Rh factor is an inherited blood protein, or antigen present in the red blood cell. They are classified as positive or negative.
It is essential to know the blood group of your kids, as it is required during a blood transfusion or organ transplant.
Calcium Total Serum
Total calcium serum test measures the total amount of calcium in the body. Calcium is an essential mineral for our body, as our cell needs them for their work. Calcium helps in building strong bones n teeth and for the proper functioning of the heart. Calcium total serum will help in diagnosing hypercalcemia or hypocalcemia, different kind of bone problems.
Blood Glucose Fasting
Fasting blood sugar levels means refraining from eating or drinking of any liquids other than water for approximately 8 hours and it is done for testing for diabetes. A blood sample is taken after making the child fast overnight. A fasting blood sugar level of approximately 126/mg/dL or higher indicates type 1 diabetes.
In the recent years there has been a rise in the incidence and prevalence of type 2 diabetes in pediatric patients. Blood glucose fasting screening test is helpful for early diagnosis, treatment and a better likelihood of achieving adequate glycemic control.
Children learn and grow with their age, from a toddler to teenage, they go through many stages of development. A basic screening test will help in finding the problems before they even start. It helps you stay a step ahead of the health problems and tackle them on time.
Worry a little less with timely health checkups and create more happy memories with your babies.
