Pregnancy is no doubt a beautiful journey but with hassles. The body goes through numerous changes during this time to prepare for the birth of your baby. And when the time to deliver the baby, you must choose between a natural birth and a C-section. While it’s not a choice for most women, it is often chosen as the last resort,  in instances of complications that could hurt the baby or the mother. Not only that, but cesarean section delivery could also pose some side effects for the mother.

If the experience seems familiar to you and you’ve undergone a cesarean section to deliver your baby, you must do the needful for a smooth recovery. You must also expect some side effects which are only common and would heal with time.

This blog will discuss some of those side effects and recovery tips. Keep reading

Firstly, what to expect after a C-section

Pain

Sadly, you won’t be done away with the pain. It’s common to have pains that feel like menstrual cramps. This is because your blood vessels in the uterus narrow down to prevent excess bleeding. You can take pain relievers to manage the pain but consult your medical practitioner first.

Vaginal discharge and bleeding

You may notice vaginal bleeding for a few weeks after your cesarean section delivery. This is your body’s way of getting rid of excess tissues from the body that were in place to support the baby. Additionally, you may also expect the bleeding to change colour gradually. At first, you may notice it to be red, which can turn to pink, brown or yellow until it stops.

Breast soreness

Your breasts produce colostrum after your delivery. It is a nutrient-rich substance that boosts your baby’s immune system. Owing to this substance, your breasts begin to swell and become tender as they fill up milk to provide nutrients to the baby. If it bothers you, you can consider putting cold washclothes in between feedings. In case you’re not breastfeeding, you may want to wear a supportive and firm bra. Refrain from rubbing the breasts as it will make more milk.

Skin and changes in hair

You may experience speeded hair growth and less hair fall during pregnancy because of high levels of hormones during this time. However, after a cesarean section delivery, you may experience hair thinning, at least in the first 3-4 months owing to changing hormone levels and your body trying to recover from C-section delivery. Your body’s first priority will be recovery rather than your hair needs. Hence, you must expect hair shedding.

Unusual fatigue

Once again, cesarean section is a blow to the body. Your body needs to heal from it, hence you can expect unusual fatigue and mood changes as your body tries to go back to normal conditions.

Tips for a speedy recover

Cut down the workout, take it easy:

Remember, your body is recovering. It is utilising all its energy to ensure you get back to your healthy self. Your body may not have the energy to fuel your workouts and the post-workout recovery. Not to mention, any unnecessary pressure on your incision should be avoided; exercise may put it.

Hence, you must take it easy. Instead, you can go for short walks and stretching if your muscles get tired sitting all day (only if your doctor allows it).

Drink plenty of fluids

Hydration is essential in all phases of life, especially if you are pregnant. Ensure that you drink plenty of fluids to keep it hydrated and improve other functions in the body.

Take a good and balanced diet

Your diet is where your body gets energy from. This energy is not only required for essential body functions but recovery as well. Ensure that you eat a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients and vitamins.

Practice deep breathing exercises

Practicing deep breathing exercises prevents lung congestion which may develop from sitting in the bed for a long time.

Lastly, don’t miss your doctor appointments

Following up with a doctor is non-negotiable. Make sure you keep up with your doctor visits to ensure everything is going smoothly and your body is recovering as it should. Lastly, don’t forget to take care of your mental health. Go for spas and massages, follow a hobby and do everything you like. Pamper yourself as you would pamper your baby.
